Crossroads School of Ministry (SOM) is designed to equip and prepare the disciple of Jesus Christ for the work of ministry. As Christians, we're called to that work everyday. It's not limited to becoming a missionary and moving to Africa.  The six basic classes offered at the SOM will better equip you for the ministries you're called to. The SOM follows a systematic approach that integrates classroom discussion, reading and writing assignments and personal study to help you develop a solid foundation of understanding.

Survey of the Old Testament - History We'll take a walk through the history of Israel from Adam to Esther. The Apostles knew and understood the Messiah from an Old Testament perspective. It gave them guidance, direction and meaning. To truly understand the Messiah, we must also understand the world He lived in. The Apostles used the Old Testament to demonstrate that Jesus is the Messiah. In this class, we'll put each book in proper context and make the complex seem just a little easier.

Courses:

Systematic Theology Don't let the name of this class intimidate you. Theology simply means "the study of God." This foundational class provides the basis for understanding God and our relationship with Him. This course will help you better understand the "easy" passages and make sense of the difficult passages. Our system of study will be to divide the class into sections on:

  • The Bible
  • God the Father
  • God the Son
  • God the Holy Spirit
  • Man
  • Salvation
  • Spiritual Beings
  • The Church
  • The End Times

We'll look at how concepts taught in the Bible apply to everyday living. Survey of the Old Testament - History. We'll take a walk through the history of Israel from Adam to Esther.

Survey of the Old Testament - Wisdom and Prophets In the second half of our survey, we'll explore the books of wisdom (or poetry) and the work of the prophets. From the suffering of Job to the wisdom of Solomon, we'll examine the language and lessons that set these five books apart. As we turn to the prophets, we'll explore more than just the Messianic prophecies of Isaiah and the apocalyptic prophecies of Daniel and Ezekiel. We'll put all the prophets in historical context, gain insight from their messages, and show their relationships to each other.

Survey of the New Testament We'll first explore the harmony of the Gospels in an integrated approach to the life of Christ. Then, we'll use The Acts of the Apostles as a running timeline to put the epistles in context. You'll get to know the people and places of the New Testament better as we focus on key leaders of the early church.

Effective Teaching Paul told his protégé, Timothy, "…the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others." This class will focus on the practical side of teaching. We'll start with the basics of preparation - how to study what was written, what it meant and what is the application for us. We'll examine various tools to make the job easier. Then, we'll move into methods of instruction - how to lead a small group study or preach to a larger audience. For the "non-teacher", the skills you gain in this class will help you share your faith with others, counsel friends, or explain passages to your children.

Apologetics and Evangelism Jesus, Peter, Paul and Appolos all serve as roll models in their defense of the faith. Peter commands us to, "…always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you…" The study of apologetics tells us how to do just that. We'll explore a variety of approaches including historical, rational and scientific and we'll do it in a way that makes sense (to you and your unsaved neighbor). Your study of apologetics will help you guard against false teachings. Apologetics is often called the handmaiden of evangelism since it prepares the mind so the heart can receive. We'll explore various ways to effectively share your faith.
